Abuse in childhood
Maltreatment in childhood can have an impact well into adulthood. The pain often persists, even though you may have tried to numb or repress it for decades. For example, the violence suffered in childhood may lead to
- having difficulties trusting and opening up to other people - even if they are actually very close to you,
- devaluing yourself, talking yourself down, not taking a stand and possibly allowing yourself to be mistreated again and again,
- that you are sometimes gripped by hatred and anger, react irascibly, push other people away and, for example, treat your children with a harshness that frightens you,
- that you yourself do not know who you actually are, what you feel, what you want, what your own needs actually are.
