Psychological violence
Psychological violence is real and it is widespread: In a recently published study, four out of ten men reported having experienced psychological violence in a relationship.
Psychological violence takes many forms, for example when you are
- insulted, humiliated, defamed, provoked or even threatened,
- bullied, coerced or devalued,
- constantly controlled, be it regarding your finances or private activities on your smartphone, or your property being destroyed,
- being forced into contacts and activities that you dislike, or being forbidden contacts that are important to you.
Psychological violence and its consequences are usually invisible from the outside. However, if defamation, coercion and threats are suffered over the long term, this often destroys your own sense of identity and, above all, your self-confidence in the long term.
