    Frequently asked questions and answers

    Yes, the advice service is available regardless of the social and ethnic origin, age, disability, religion or sexual orientation of the person seeking advice. It explicitly applies to cis and trans people as well as non-binary people. Male adolescents under the age of 18 are referred to suitable youth-specific help services.

    Some men find it difficult to access help services due to their hearing impairment. The key information on this website is also available in easy-to-read language. Advice in sign language is not yet available. Hearing-impaired or deaf men can currently seek advice by email or chat.

    The staff at the men's helpline are qualified professionals, mostly from the fields of social work, social education or psychology. As a rule, they have completed counseling or therapy training and have been involved in counseling men affected by violence for many years. In any case, they will take your concerns seriously and treat you without prejudice.

    Counseling on the violence against men helpline is possible in many ways. As some victims find it easier to communicate their experiences and feelings in writing, there is also the option of email and instant chat advice via the website in addition to telephone advice. The advisors will answer your questions promptly.

    Anonymity and confidentiality are basic requirements for those affected to find the courage to come forward and ask for support. Telephone and online advice (email and instant chat advice) is confidential and anonymous. People seeking advice do not have to give their name or any other personal details.

    As a general rule, we know and respect that it can often be very difficult and shameful, especially for men, to talk to other people about experiences of violence. You therefore decide what and how much you want to tell and in which direction the conversation should go. It does not matter to us whether you are experiencing or have experienced physical, psychological, sexualized, economic or other forms of violence. You can also contact us if you are not sure whether you are or have been exposed to violence.

    In any case, we will look at your individual situation together with you and will be happy to give you a professional assessment if you wish. We can also develop solution strategies together and, if necessary, consider steps you can take to protect yourself from (further) violence. Of course, we will also be happy to provide you with information on local advice and support services.

    However, if you simply need a sympathetic ear so that you are not completely alone with the violence you have suffered and can unburden yourself, that is also perfectly fine.

    Counseling is currently primarily available in German and English. Turkish-speaking men can ask their questions during consultation hours on Mondays from 6 to 8 pm. Email consultations are also available in Turkish.

    In principle, we see ourselves as a classic "clearing house", i.e. a first point of contact where all men affected by violence can receive low-threshold, free, anonymous and, above all, immediate advice on their specific situation. During the counseling sessions, we usually work together with the victims to find suitable, usually local help options where they can get the support they need in the future.

    Longer-term advice processes on the phone are therefore not carried out; we are also unable to offer appointments. However, it is of course possible (and happens more frequently in everyday life) for a man to contact us a second or third time because new questions may have arisen or he would like to discuss a certain procedure again. In these cases, we then try to conduct this further communication via email so that we remain reasonably easy to reach by phone for "new callers".

    Of course, you are very welcome to draw the attention of a man affected by violence to our offer of help. It may be easier for him to talk about his experiences (anonymously) by phone, email or chat than to attend a face-to-face counseling session. You can also offer to be present at the counseling session to provide support. But please bear in mind that violence is a very sensitive topic and often also very shameful. So please do not urge anyone to call the violence against men helpline.

    Als Angehörige (potentiell) gewaltbetroffener Männer sind Sie häufig in einer schwierigen Situation: Sie haben den Verdacht oder wissen sogar, dass Ihr Freund, Partner, Sohn, Vater, Bruder oder Nachbar aktuell Gewalt erlebt oder dass er mit den Folgen früher erlittener Gewalt zu kämpfen hat. Aber wie können Sie ihm am besten helfen? Wie überhaupt das Thema ansprechen? Und was können Sie ihm letztlich konkret raten? 

    Gerne können Sie sich in solchen Situationen an das Hilfetelefon Gewalt an Männern wenden. Wir nehmen uns auf jeden Fall die Zeit, um mit Ihnen über Ihre Vermutung und Sorgen zu sprechen und bei Bedarf gemeinsam zu überlegen, wie Sie Ihrem Angehörigen helfen können und gleichzeitig Ihr eigenes Wohlbefinden im Blick behalten.  

    Aber auch Fachkräfte, die im Rahmen ihrer Arbeit von Gewalt betroffene Männer beraten oder begleiten - wie etwa Mitarbeiter:innen von Beratungsstellen oder Behörden, Ärzt:innen und Psycho­therapeut:innen, Polizei­einsatz­kräfte, Gleichstellungs­beauftragte oder Betriebsräte - können manchmal unsicher sein, wie sie Betroffene am besten unterstützen können. Falls Sie als professionelle Fachkraft sich also fragen, welche Angebote es für gewaltbetroffene Männer überhaupt gibt und wie Sie am besten vorgehen sollten, damit der Mann Hilfsangebote möglichst auch annehmen kann, dann melden Sie sich ebenfalls gerne bei uns. 

    Damit sowohl für die Gespräche mit den gewaltbetroffenen Männern als auch für den Austausch mit Fachkräften genügend Zeit besteht, gibt es für Fachkräfte gesonderte Sprechstunden, die den folgenden Kurz­vorstellungen zu entnehmen sind.     Die folgenden Beratungsstellen organisieren gemeinschaftlich das Hilfetelefon Gewalt an Männern: 

    man-o-mann männerberatung 

    Die man-o-mann männerberatung in Bielefeld ist Anlaufstelle für hilfesuchende Männer und unterstützt bei verschiedensten Schwierigkeiten rund um ausgeübte oder erlittene Gewalt, Partnerschaft, Vaterschaft, sexuelle, psych(osomat)ische oder auch Identitätsprobleme in Form von Einzelberatung oder Gruppentherapie und bietet für Institutionen Fortbildungen, Supervisionen und Fachvorträge an. Außerdem betreibt die man-o-mann männerberatung eine Männerschutzeinrichtung mit vier Schutzplätzen in Bielefeld.

    Via - Wege aus der Gewalt 

    Die Beratungs- und Clearingstelle der AWO Augsburg bietet Unterstützung für Betroffene, Angehörige und Fachkräfte bei häuslicher und/oder sexualisierter Gewalt. Die Angebote beinhalten telefonische, digitale und persönliche Beratung (auch in anonymisierter Form möglich), ein Clearing der individuellen Gewaltsituation, Schutz- und Sicherheitsberatung, Unterstützung bei der Entscheidungsfindung, Stabilisierung in der Krise, Beratung bei Folgeerscheinungen von Gewalt sowie Vermittlung spezifischer Hilfen.

    Sozialberatung Stuttgart  

    Die Fachberatungsstelle „Gewaltschutz für Männer“ der Sozialberatung Stuttgart e.V. bietet Unterstützung für männliche Betroffene von häuslicher Gewalt in Form von Einzelberatung, Krisenintervention und individueller Sicherheitsplanung. Die Beratung kann in Präsenz, telefonisch und online stattfinden. Dabei handelt es sich um ein anonymes und kostenfreies Angebot. Zusätzlich gibt es die Möglichkeit für Männer im geschützten und von Fachpersonal betreuten Wohnraum Zuflucht zu finden und neue Lebensperspektiven zu entwickeln.

    SAFE! 

    Die Beratungsstelle SAFE! der Opfer- und Täterhilfe Mainz bietet Männern, die von Gewalt in engen sozialen Beziehungen betroffen sind, vertrauliche, auf Wunsch anonyme und kostenfreie Beratung und Unterstützung - sowohl persönlich als auch telefonisch und online. 

    Aktuell wird keine Sprechstunde für Fachpersonal angeboten.

    Am frühen Abend ruft eine etwa 60jährige Frau beim Hilfetelefon an. Ihr emotionaler Stress ist spürbar. Sie sei nicht sicher, ob sie sich als Frau auch melden dürfe, aber sie habe kürzlich erfahren, dass ihr Sohn durch seine Partnerin Gewalt erfahre. Nun sei sie extrem besorgt und wisse nicht, was sie machen solle.

    Wir vom Hilfetelefon Gewalt an Männern haben einen weiten Gewaltbegriff: Für uns ist nicht ausschlaggebend, inwieweit das, was Sie erlitten haben, strafrechtlich relevant ist oder nicht. Entscheidend ist, dass Sie unter der Grenzverletzung, die Sie erfahren mussten, leiden und daher Unterstützung benötigen. Zögern Sie daher nicht, uns zu kontaktieren, wenn Sie irgendeine Form von Grenzverletzung erleben mussten, die Sie nicht zur Ruhe kommen lässt – ganz egal, was und wann es passiert ist!   • I will no longer stand idly by and watch!

    As relatives of (potentially) violent men, you are often in a difficult situation: you suspect or even know that your friend, partner, son, father, brother or neighbor is currently experiencing violence or that he is struggling with the consequences of violence suffered in the past. But how can you best help them? How can you even broach the subject? And what specific advice can you give them?

    You are welcome to contact the violence against men helpline in such situations. We will definitely take the time to talk to you about your suspicions and concerns and, if necessary, consider together how you can help your relative while keeping your own well-being in mind.

    However, professionals who advise or support men affected by violence as part of their work - such as employees of advice centers or authorities, doctors and psychotherapists, police officers, equal opportunities officers or works councils - can sometimes be unsure how they can best support those affected. So if you, as a professional, are wondering what services are available for men affected by violence and how you should best proceed so that the man can accept offers of help if possible, please get in touch with us.

    The man-o-mann männerberatung in Bielefeld is a point of contact for men seeking help and provides support for a wide range of difficulties relating to violence, partnership, fatherhood, sexual, psych(osomatic)isis and identity problems in the form of individual counseling or group therapy and offers further training, supervision and specialist lectures for institutions. man-o-mann männerberatung also runs a men's protection facility with four shelters in Bielefeld.

    Via - Ways out of violence

    The AWO Augsburg advice and clearing centre offers support for victims, relatives and professionals in cases of domestic and/or sexualized violence. The services include telephone, digital and personal counselling (also possible in anonymous form), a clearing of the individual violence situation, protection and safety advice, support in decision-making, stabilization in the crisis, advice on the consequences of violence and referral to specific help.

    Social counseling Stuttgart

    The specialist advice center "Protection against violence for men" of Sozialberatung Stuttgart e.V. offers support for men affected by domestic violence in the form of individual counselling, crisis intervention and individual safety planning. Counseling can take place in person, by telephone and online. The service is anonymous and free of charge. There is also the opportunity for men to find refuge and develop new life perspectives in protected living space supervised by specialist staff.

    Violence has many faces

    We at the violence against men helpline have a broad definition of violence: it is not important to us to what extent what you have suffered is criminally relevant or not. What matters is that you are suffering from the violation of boundaries that you have experienced and therefore need support.
